Who Was Mary Seacole?

Mary Seacole was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1805. She learned about traditional Jamaican medicines and caring for sick people from her mother. As Mary grew older, she travelled to different countries and developed her knowledge of medicine and caring for others. Mary BBP

When the Crimean War began, Mary wanted to help British soldiers fighting far from home. She travelled to Crimea using her own money and established the British Hotel, where soldiers could find food, supplies and other things they needed.

Mary also travelled close to the battlefield to care for sick and wounded soldiers. Her kindness and courage made her well known among the troops, who affectionately called her “Mother Seacole.” Mary BBP
