Every October, people across the UK celebrate Black History Month for kids and families — a special time to learn about, recognise and celebrate the stories, achievements and contributions of Black people in Britain.

Black history is an important part of British history. From pioneers who helped change society and campaign for equality to scientists, writers, artists, athletes, teachers, doctors and community leaders, Black Britons have helped shape the UK we know today.

Black History Month was first celebrated in the UK in 1987, following the work of Akyaaba Addai-Sebo, who helped establish the celebration in London and encourage greater recognition of Black history and achievements.

At My Iwe, we believe every child should have the opportunity to discover these stories.

Throughout Black History Month, we’ll be exploring inspiring people, important moments in history, culture, achievements and everyday stories through child-friendly resources, facts and activities.

But we also believe that Black history should be explored throughout the year — not only in October.

My Iwe is a platform that celebrates diversity, representation and inclusion. We want children to discover stories, cultures, people and experiences from different backgrounds all year round, helping them learn more about the diverse world around them.

Black History Month gives us another opportunity to celebrate these stories, while continuing a journey of learning that lasts throughout the year.

Join My Iwe as we celebrate, discover and learn about Black British history together.

Explore our Black History Month resources, discover inspiring stories and interact with our activities as we learn about the people, events and achievements that have helped shape Britain.
